Surgeon allegedly bills comp for $500K of fake work in California
April 09, 2019, Sacramento, CA
A Sacramento-area neurosurgeon is accused of insurance fraud and theft in a $500,000 scheme, state officials said Tuesday.
Dr. Laura Anderson, 64, of Carmichael, was arrested Monday and charged with medical insurance fraud, workers’ compensation fraud and grand theft, according to a release from the California Department of Insurance. She was released on bail and is slated to appear in court April 18 for her arraignment
From 2013 to 2018, Anderson allegedly submitted more than $500,000 in fraudulent medical service reimbursement claims by billing the state Compensation Insurance Fund for services she never provided and doctoring bills to illegally obtain a bigger payout from the insurer, officials said.
Anderson has been affiliated with Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento and Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
“Medical insurance fraud drives up the cost of health care when insurers pass the losses along to consumers in the form of higher premiums," said Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara in a statement.
A taskforce made up of the state's insurance department, the Franchise Tax Board and several district attorneys' offices investigated the case.
