Clerk accused of stealing $30K from New York health plan
April 03, 2019, Geddes, NY
A Geddes clerk who works in accounting for the town was arrested today, accused of swindling the town of $30,000 in a health-insurance scam.
Shannon Carhart, 43, was charged with felony grand larceny and falsifying business records after an investigation by the state Comptroller’s Office and the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office.
Carhart is accused of enrolling in the town’s health care plan after telling officials she declined coverage and falsifying records to that effect, the Comptroller’s office said in a news release.
By doing so, Carhart tried to receive $6,000 from the town meant for those who opted out of coverage, the comptroller said. She is also accused of failing to pay her coverage premiums, costing the town $30,000.
“Ms. Carthart hoodwinked Geddes town officials and altered reports to cover up her theft,” Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said in the release.
Carhart was placed on administrative leave as the case continues.
