Policy statement
on prescription monitoring programs
Adopted June 2009
The Coalition
Against Insurance Fraud Board of Directors adopted a resolution in 2007 accepting the
report Prescription for Peril that discussed the role of insurance fraud in the
diversion of prescription drugs. The Report included in its conclusions that states
should enact strong prescription monitoring programs that would keep track of those
addictive prescription drugs that are involved in the drug diversion and that the
monitoring programs are an essential tool for law enforcement in its efforts to curtail
drug diversion.
A number of states have enacted monitoring programs in the past several years. However, many of the programs have not been funded at adequate levels to assure their effectiveness or efficiency.
Therefore, the Government Affairs Committee of the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud to follow on the decisions of the Board does hereby support state passage of prescription monitoring programs that will be fully functioning that would allow adequate access for law enforcement.
