74 health plans to avoid

State insurance regulators have taken action against these purported health-care plans and affiliates for alleged violations of state laws or regulations involving sale of unauthorized insurance and deceptive sales practices. The FBI and state law enforcement also are investigating several of these companies. The actions include criminal indictments, cease-and-desist orders, civil suits and consumer warnings. Before signing up with a health plan, contact your state insurance department to ensure the plan is licensed and authorized to do business.

Note also that purported health plans sometimes take names similar to legitimate insurance companies.
