This site has been very informative. I noticed there is no mention of annuities being sold to the elderly and vulnerable adults. I believe their is a huge opportunity to educate seniors on how to protect their finances and recognize these schemes perpetrated by life insurance agents who are not licensed to give financial advice. I think this is an under reported crime due to the vulnerable position of the the elderly consumer. It is also very complicated to understand and the agencies such as adult protective services have no legal rights to stop the crime once reported. The annuity schemes can be devastating to the elderly and their quality of life.

Hi,

Time Magazine recently ran an article 'why medical bills are killing us' and included the story of the Recchi's who MD Anderson charged over 83,000 for cancer treatment MD Anderson is supposed to be a non profit but made a 26 percent profit last year and the head of MD Anderson made more than 2 million dollars last year. I think they should reimburse the Recchi's 26% of the 83,000 and apologize to them for not giving them assistance or treating them with compassion at the time they most needed it. I do not know the Recchi's but I was absolutely furious when I read this. this type of rip off by the medical community has got to stop.

That's why I created a petition to MD Anderson Cancer Treatment Center, Manager, Asm MD Anderson.

Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Barry - You make some good points (although I think your fraud estimate is way too high). However, there are some good remedies for fraud in health care reform. I've also been impressed with the results from the Departments of Justice and HHS in the last year. The big question is whether enhanced efforts by the government will chase scammers to private insurers. We'll see.

So, Dennis, are you surprised.

The law also allocates money for prosecution of Medicare, Medicaid and health insurance fraud that gets smaller every year the law is in effect and which is very small when they admit health insurance fraud is taking about $300 billion a year.

The statute, in its more than 2000 pages, does almost nothing about fraud other than making the sentences of those few it may catch without a dedicated anti-fraud unit of investigators and prosecutors, greater than current law.

Fraud is not a concern and those who are presently cheating the government successfully will have a quiet and underfunded insurance industry to steal from with impunity.
