Scammers peddling fake health coverage in Nebraska

October 12, 2017, Omaha, NE — Scammers pretending to be representatives of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska are calling people in an attempt to obtain their personal information.

The insurance company has alerted Nebraska’s attorney general and the Nebraska Department of Insurance about the scam, said Marcia Cady of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska. The scammers are calling and pretending to offer insurance plans well below the market value, she said.

A warning on the insurance company’s website said the scammer activity has been traced to Simple Health of Hollywood, Florida. Victims are reporting that the company charges their credit card monthly but never provides insurance cards or proof of coverage, and it’s difficult to cancel.

“We first heard of this scam this summer,” Cady said. “We just hope that any elderly people being called would consult with their children or approved guardians before releasing any information.”

Blue Cross never would call someone and ask for personal or credit card information over the phone, Cady said. Nor does it sell anyone’s personal information to other companies for marketing purposes.

Anyone receiving this type of call, Cady said, should hang up and call the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska fraud hotline at 877-632-2583. Consumers who think they have been scammed should contact the Nebraska Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 800-727-6432.

Jim Hegarty, president of the Better Business Bureau region that includes Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota and western Iowa, said consumers also should be aware of scammers claiming to provide Medicaid and Medicare plans.

“Anytime someone reaches you by phone, you should let them know you are going to hang up and contact the (insurance) entity with a number you know is accurate,” Hegarty said. “Do not rely on caller ID, because these people can spoof the phone number to make it appear the call is coming from a legitimate company.”
